Chief Executive Officer

Hands on leadership role overseeing governance, strategy and sustainable operations for a NT council.

The Wagait Shire Council is a local government body in the Northern Territory of Australia, governing a small, coastal community on the Cox Peninsula, directly across the harbour from Darwin. Established in its current form in 2008, the council serves a population of approximately 450–500 residents and focuses on maintaining a quiet, safe and pristine lifestyle.

Wagait Shire Council is seeking an experienced and community‑focused Chief Executive Officer to lead the organisation and work in close partnership with elected members to deliver services that directly benefit the Wagait community.

Operating within a small local government environment, this role offers a rare opportunity to combine strategic leadership with hands‑on operational oversight, ensuring the Council operates sustainably, transparently and in full compliance with the Local Government Act.

The Opportunity

As Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for the overall leadership, management and administration of Wagait Shire Council. You will provide professional advice to the President and Elected Members, implement Council decisions, and lead the organisation to deliver high‑quality services across governance, finance, infrastructure, community services, compliance and workforce management.

This is a highly visible leadership role where your decisions will have a direct and tangible impact on the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership to ensure long‑term sustainability of Council operations
  • Lead governance, compliance and risk management in line with legislation
  • Deliver sound financial management, budgeting and long‑term planning
  • Oversee day‑to‑day operations, infrastructure and asset management
  • Build strong relationships with the community, government and stakeholders
  • Lead and develop staff in a small, collaborative organisational environment
  • Support Council’s role in emergency and risk management situations

About You

You will be a practical and adaptable leader who is comfortable working across both strategic and operational priorities. You will bring strong governance knowledge, sound financial acumen and the ability to work effectively with elected members, staff and a small community.

You will demonstrate:

  • Senior leadership experience, ideally within local government or the public sector
  • Strong understanding of governance, compliance and ethical decision‑making
  • Proven financial management and organisational sustainability experience
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • Capacity to lead in a small organisation requiring hands‑on involvement

Relevant tertiary qualifications in business, public administration, governance, management or a related discipline are required, with postgraduate or governance training highly regarded.
